Mental Health Counselor and Personal Fitness Trainer
specializing in trauma recovery and stress related disorders
I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area where the ocean, coastal mountains, and redwood forrests were a constant source of healing and inspiration. My love of the outdoors and physical activity has been vital to me from an early age.
I attended Humboldt State University, graduating with a certificate in group exercise instruction and a bachelor's degree in Social Science in 1998. Volunteerism and community service became a primary focus for me after completing my undergraduate work in sociology and psychology, and I spent several years working on various projects related to literacy and education before accepting a teaching position at a small school in Ifrane, Morocco.
I continued to explore fitness, getting certified as a Group Fitness Instructor and completing training in order to teach Yoga, Pilates, FitBall, and other modalities that expanded my repertoire of teaching skills. However, working with children and families from different socio-economic and cultural backgrounds who were challenged by everything from drug and alcohol abuse, domestic violence, sexual abuse, and discrimination inspired me to seek further education so that I might be of greater service to people in times of crisis.
I returned to the United States to attend Southwestern College in 2004 and recieved a Master's Degree in Counseling Psychology in 2007. I spent the next four years as a therapist and training services coordinator at the Santa Fe Rape Crisis and Trauma Treatment Center (now Solace Crisis Treatment Center). During this time I also discovered Nia, a sensory movement practice that combines dance, martial arts, and healing practices such as Alexander Technique and the Feldenkrais Method, and completed the first two belts in the Nia Training system, which follows a similar structure to martial arts. I also became a certified personal trainer and pilates instructor through the Aerobic Fitness Association of America (AFAA).
In addition to my work with individual clients at Solace, I have provided trainings and workshops on stress management, sexual trauma, PTSD, and communication skills locally and nationally. I have also collaborated with law enforcement and the New Mexico National Guard to develop stress management and PTSD prevention programs.
